This well was left open to allow for circulation of air and also because it was believed that it was unlikely that a building belonging to the Church would ever be bombarded. The red plaster on the walls was created by the Greeks using a mixture of lime, tuff powder and vegetable oil, and it was actually used to waterproof the tuff stone up to the highest water level.
